Our Purpose

Nebraska Mental Health & Aging Coalition (NeMHAC) is an all-volunteer organization based in Omaha, NE that aims to help those who are coping with mental health concerns in later life. We aim to raise awareness about the lived experiences and challenges of those who face issues related to mental health and aging; and advocate for relevant policies that address their needs. We formed this coalition to discuss relevant issues and campaign for bettering federal and local legislation and policies to be more inclusive of older Nebraskans and their mental health needs.

Our Priorities

COMPLEX CASE DISCUSSION

Consultation open to the public for challenging cases that involve care of older adults with mental health issues. To receive feedback from member(s) of the Coalition based on expertise and familiarity with the field, please send an email to lthomas@regionsix.com

ENVIRONMENTAL SCANNING

Routine updating of existing mental health services available for older adults in a variety of settings. Coalition members aim to regularly identify gaps in service networks and guide actions of the Coalition to bridge those gaps and work toward addressing barriers.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Provide trainings, workshops, conferences, webinars (with CEUs when possible) related to older adults and mental health topics. To view current resources, click below.

PUBLIC POLICY ADVOCACY

Tackle legislation pertinent to older adults with mental health issues. Provide “call-to-actions” to affect change in public policy that helps to bridge gaps and eliminate barriers to services.

History & Composition

Spearheaded by Region 6 Behavioral Health, the Nebraska Mental Health and Aging Coalition (NEMHAC) was founded in May of 2016 in partnership with the University of Nebraska at Omaha and other key community leaders within the aging services network. The initial impetus for the coalition was to address issues of long term care placement for older adults with serious mental illness (SMI).
